how much red does the statue of liberty bear?
During the night of June 24th, 1996 the Statue of Liberty in the New York harbour was illuminated in red light as a result of ‘aktion’ taken by p.t.t.red. Fiftysix Spotlights were refiltert with the same number of red filter-plates, that were attached to the existing light-shafts. Until early morning of the next day, the change remained unnoticed by the security personal of Liberty Island, which has the status of a National Monument. After two weeks of observation of the Statue of Liberty’s security system, a timespan of only 15 minutes was discovered during which the filter-plates could be placed in their premarked positions. In order not to appear suspicious to tourists and to avoid unwelcome questions, p.t.t.red was disguised as official security personal. After the operation, the security personal horded the visitors onto the last ferry to Manhattan without noticing any changes on the island. It wasn ‘t until the late hours of dusk that the actual transformation took place: The Statue of Liberty was bathed in red light. The following day several calls reached the responsible department of the Parks-Administration, all asking about the altered appearance of the Statue of Liberty. After intial ignorance of the fact, p.t.t.red was told during a later call that the observation had been reported by many callers, and that it been the effect of a alleged firework. That same night everything was back to normal on Liberty Island including the Statue of Liberty once again being put into its right light. - p.t.t.red Konzept 1996
